I'm falling so behind in my blog posts, I have no idea how I'm going to update it anymore! So I just don't.. ^^'' But I reckon since I have time now, I'll just condense two entries into one =) This will hopefully be more of a photoblog and less text so I can be lazy!
First off, Vivid Sydney 2010 has ended. I remember the event from last year, where icie and I went scouting around city, looking at the different artistic creations on two separate nights. It was raining quite heavily during one of the nights and a few of the light decorations were broken, but otherwise, it was a really fun experience. This year, there seemed to be a lot less work put into the lightings- most were just photos or images projected onto buildings.

There was this advertisement for "Fire on Water" at the Rocks, which we went to. It was really just a random play and lights reflecting off the water. Large crowd, so all the photos I took were taken above the head of others.

The finale was a burning heart. What does it symbolise? I have no idea. Burning love? Moe moe rabu?

It was a freezing cold night, but they had large bins of burning wood everywhere at the Rocks.

A tunnel of blue lights~ Yea, should have done some artsy long exposure stuff here, which my brother did- he had the tripod and was unashamed to set up with all the other photogs at the side of the street to snap some light trails. Seriously, there was a whole bunch of them looking suss.

Super cute fluffy possum at Hyde Park! They are so daring- my brother and I were kneeling on the ground to take some better pictures of some possums in front of us, and these two other ones crept up behind us. One climbed over icie's leg, and one went up to my bag and tried to look for food.

Complete with water fountains in front of it, which, when not sprouting water, forms a sort of reflection pool.
It was quite a good night to sight see- the skies were clear and it wasn't raining, but it was freezing cold. And as we would do if we were in Japan, walking around taking photos on a cold night means jumping into the closest ramen ya for some piping hot noodles.

Well, rice in icie's case. His karaage don. This was at Kura, behind Market City.

And mine- beef udon.
We took a minute to order, they took 5 minutes to bring the order, and it took us 8 minutes to eat. In and out in less than 15, feeling satisfied and definitely much warmer.

My mum had some friends visiting from Singapore and we went out for some food together. Since they've never been to the Rocks, tt and I took them there.
Thus concludes Entry 1 of this post!
I think this must have been about three weeks ago when I went to Newtown. Ever since graduating from USyd, I haven't been to Newtown very often at all, but tt's family recommended a vegetarian restaurant that does yum cha during weekends only, so one fine Sunday, we went.

Usyd feels so different now that I no longer study there.

Sunday morning- lots of dogs.

The yum cha vegetarian place opens at 12 noon for yum cha every weekend~
From Week 23, 2010 |
We were one of the first ones there.

"Green Gourmet Vegetarian Restaurant"
From Week 23, 2010 |
I think it's fairly common for vegetarian yum chas to have staffs coming out with plates of the food on a platter, and they'll come to every table, rather than the dangerous push-carts in normal yum cha. Our first dish (and there's plenty more to come, despite there being just the two of us)- fried... puff... thingies... I give up, I'm not going to translate accurately what the foods are, because it's next to impossible.
From Week 23, 2010 |
Inside- that's not chicken. Assorted veggies!
From Week 23, 2010 |
Looks weird, but they're actually REALLY good. Seaweed spring rolls.
From Week 23, 2010 |
Yep, more veggies! I used to dislike spring rolls because it's just so common, and it's deep fried, and it's... usually not nice. Until I worked at Midori- they have the BEST spring rolls there, and I don't even know why it's so good. I haven't had any spring rolls that can beat those yet, but these sure come close. Seaweed really works in this spring roll.
From Week 23, 2010 |
Figured that after all the deep fried items even though they are really just veggies, we should at least try a little healthier food, like rice paper rolls. With tofu!
From Week 23, 2010 |
Can never go wrong with rice paper rolls, unless they put those nasty cilantros in there.
From Week 23, 2010 |
Assorted mushrooms. I loved this. I wish all yum cha served this dish. It had this amazing woody taste that all mushrooms should have.
From Week 23, 2010 |
I ordered this against tt's preference- but I was tempted by the bean curd wrapping.
From Week 23, 2010 |
Some tofu and I forgot what that suspicious meat-looking object was on top of each tofu. I think it was taro?
From Week 23, 2010 |
This should fool just about anyone. It's char siu cheong fun! Wait, did I mention we were at a vegetarian restaurant? =D
From Week 23, 2010 |
I'm actually sick of glutinous rice dumplings. My dad used to buy heaps of frozen ones which cooks in the microwave in 3 minutes. They were really nice, and I ate too many, so now I won't eat it in restaurants or anywhere really. Tt likes it though, so I think he had pretty much the whole thing.
From Week 23, 2010 |
I'm super impressed he managed to finish it actually. Along with all the other food. We're not done yet by the way.
From Week 23, 2010 |
This one, I'll admit, I only got it because it looks so pretty. The auntie came, offering 3 different steamers of "gao"s, all of different colours. Green and yellow were pretty, but pink is definitely the one that stood out most.
From Week 23, 2010 |
I felt like I was eating minced meat, but it definitely wasn't.
From Week 23, 2010 |
For our grand finale, which we were actually thinking of not getting because our stomachs were pretty much at their limits already, we got this! It was nearly snapped up by someone else in another table, but we assertively caught the guy's attention and he put it on our table instead =D Chicken! It looks like chicken and at the first few bites, it felt like a really really tender chicken. I'd be fooled if I didn't lick off all the sauce and tasted the "meat" by itself. Without the sauce, the illusion fades- it's tofu, but wow, I bet it can fool many and pass off as chicken.
I don't actually know what the bill came up to, but it wouldn't have been cheap- we really ate till we couldn't eat anymore, but when we thought it through, it's really all just vegetables. It'll go through the system really quickly and sure enough, a few hours later, we were ok enough to eat again. Usually, after eating so much, there'll be this sick feeling of having eaten too much, but not in this case. Maybe it's because they're all vegetables or something, but we left the restaurant with a pleasant sort of fullness.
Can't explain, so I'll just be quiet and end this entry here. It was a nice experience though- my first vegetarian yum cha!

I can't live without meat but the vegetarian yum cha actually looks good to me!
The last dish was really well done, couldn't tell at all it was chicken =) Apparently the Nan Tien temple has some nice vegetarian food, should go there one day.
Also, possum! Looks as if you took it during day time x_x
it'll feel so much like meat, you can tell yourself it's not vegan and your mind will believe it. Try it the next time you're at Newtown one weekend.
tt, the power of lightroom =P
can't wait to go back to the vegetarian yum cha and try the other dishes they have there.
i dont believe its your camera!!!! and mei.... its st mary's,not st andrews.....

I admit that the vivid photos weren't from my camera, but the yum cha was!
